Elevation of a particular place can be easily
measured at various points by means of topographic
surveys. The points are further represented as contour lines on the
map. These surveys are widely used around the world and these are mainly
classified into 3 categories, namely planning, land use and development. Many countries
have their own government agencies who carry on the process of topographic surveys and help people
with ways of getting from one corner to another corner with the help of maps.
The function of these surveys is carried out by a geologist and his main goal
is to produce two-dimensional maps and which correspond to three dimensional
workings of the landscape.
